One of my favorite breakfast spots, A Taste of Heaven has a sign that I love. No, it’s not the sign that telling kids of all ages to behave themselves and use their inside voices that caused so much controversy, though I do love that one as well. This one says:
“What if the Hokey-Pokey really is what it’s all about?”
That is a very good question. Scooty wants that sign to hang over his desk. I think I want that sign in every room of my existence.
Coming off of intensive strategic planning sessions with four different companies in less than a week – a theater company, an advocacy organization, a health education center, and my own company, I thought my head might explode yesterday. So, I packed my bag yesterday afternoon, bid adieu to the staff, and headed out for an afternoon and evening off the clock.
Imagine my surprise when the world didn’t fall about because I wasn’t working! Of course, I am writing this blog before I check my email, but I can be pretty sure that things will be okay.
I’m not advocating complete dismissal of all responsibilities, but for those of us who walk around with To Do lists in our head and are obsessed with seizing every moment for the productive difference we can make in the world around us, I think it would be helpful to remember often that life is about living and not about doing. Being present for each experience and moment means that moment calls for productivity, than we can give in to it. When that moment calls for rest, we can give in to it. When that moment calls for play, we can give in to it. I think that’s called balance, but don’t quote me on it. I don’t know enough about that foreign concept to say more than that.
I ended my time off yesterday with a new friend who spoke through tears about his little brother who died unexpectedly two weeks ago. That certainly drove home for me that fact that this all will come to an end at some point. We better show up for our lives and not just get lost in the obsessions we have tendencies to do.
If you need some perspective, balance, and play in your life, then join us for Battlestar Fantastica and Alien Queen: The Concert on Saturday night, December 10. We will be doing the Hokey Pokey all night!
